Marion Intermodal Facility Celebrates Decade of Growth

MARION, AR (KAIT) - Governor Mike Beebe and other state officials today toured operations at Union Pacific's Marion Intermodal Terminal in Crittenden County, and celebrated ten years of growth.

Initially built to replace intermodal operations at two overcapacity yards in Memphis, the Marion facility has grown to become one of Union Pacific's largest intermodal terminals.  Intermodal transportation involves the movement of freight using multiple modes of transportation including ship, rail and truck.  The Marion facility processed more than 400,000 containers last year and has grown 78 percent since 2001.

The high-security facility is equipped with 98,000 feet of railroad track and ten lanes of traffic near Interstate-40, which has become one of the busiest transportation corridors in the nation.  Authorized drivers enter the facility only after validation of their identity through a biometric finger print scan.  Drivers are then directed to their assigned container location for pick-up and delivery to their final destination.
