LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - A bid to create a state-run lottery has a new supporter in its corner: Jermain Taylor.
The former middleweight boxing champion and his wife, Erica Smith, announced Tuesday that they support a proposed constitutional amendment that would create a lottery to fund college scholarships.
Taylor, of Little Rock, was the middleweight champion for over two years after beating Bernard Hopkins in 2005, but he lost that title to Kelly Pavlik, then lost a rematch with Pavlik. The lottery measure by Lt. Gov. Bill Halter is fending off a lawsuit filed with the Arkansas Supreme Court to keep the proposal off the fall ballot.
