Evacuations Underway in Monette Following Gin Fire

MONETTE, AR (KAIT) - Emergency responders and officials in Monette are evacuating residents that live within a 100-foot radius south of the city's cotton gin, following a fire at the facility this morning.

Monette Police Chief Brian Carmichael said the fire was reported around 10:30 a.m., and is under control at this time.  He said the evacuations are being ordered as a precautionary measure due to possible toxins in the air, caused by chemicals that are stored at the facility.

Carmichael described the fire as "large," and said it was battled by firefighters from the Monette, Leachville, Black Oak and Caraway fire departments.
