LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansans cast a record number of ballots in Tuesday's general election, with more than 1 million voters participating.
According to complete but unofficial results, 1,077,530 voters cast ballots in the presidential contest - or 64.1% of the state's 1.68 million registered voters. That's up from the previous record, set in 2004, of 1,054,945 votes cast.
In the last presidential election, when Arkansas went for George W. Bush, 62% of the state's registered voters cast ballots. The highest percentage turnout - nearly 78% - came in 1980, when Ronald Reagan defeated Jimmy Carter.
Percentage-wise, turnout for this year's election is the highest since 1996, when Bill Clinton was re-elected.
