Medicare Plan D, Frustrating Seniors

JONESBORO (KAIT) . Open enrollment for Medicare begins on November 15th. The process can be complicated by yearly changes. Price increases and simply which plan to choose.

You can sign up for Medicare 3 months before and after your 65th birthday. If you already are on a plan you can only change it between now and December 31st.

Donna Monehan, EAAA "You need to shop around, compare your prices see that your plan is still the same. That they still cover your drugs. The price is not beyond what you can pay."

You will no doubt need some help to understand the new plans and changes. One of the places you can turn to is the East Arkansas Area Agency on Aging.

Monehan says she has seen an influx of people coming in this year for assistance.

"They're coming in to have me run their drugs through the official Medicare Dot Gov web site and then they choose their plans. That's basically what we're doing."

Other sources of help are web sites, (listed with this story)  and for possible changes to your drug plan you might want to consult your pharmacist.

Dr. Tony Bari, "With Medicare D Programs, the fact that they change each year adds to the confusion. And many times trying to find out the preferred list of drugs is very confusing for seniors. Your Pharmacist can assist patients in finding their preferred drugs or perhaps the less costly drugs to that they don't use up the entirety of their benefit early in the year."
