Ark. Lawmakers Face 'Leaner' Budget with Tax Cut

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas' incoming House speaker says Governor Beebe's budget proposal for the upcoming year will be lean because of the uncertain economy. But incoming House Speaker Robbie Wills says it also includes a proposal for an additional cut in the state's sales tax on groceries.

Wills and other House leaders got a preview of Beebe's budget proposal today, the day before the governor's office is scheduled to release it to a legislative hearing.

Wills said after a meeting with Beebe today that the budget is fairly conservative in forecast and spending. The Conway lawmaker declined to go into detail on the tax cut proposal, but called it a "good starting point" for discussions on tax relief during next year's session.
