26 treated at hospital after school buses collide in Paragould

Paragould, AR (KAIT) - UPDATED - 25 students and one bus driver were sent to the hospital after two Greene County Tech school buses collided on Pruett's Chapel Road in southwest Paragould.  The accident happened Tuesday after school.

Police officers on the scene said the buses were traveling in the same direction on Pruett's Chapel Road between the Paragould Country Club and South Rockingchair Road.  The driver in the front bus slowed down so the driver could discipline a student who was standing up.  The driver in the second bus did not slow down in time and rear-ended the first bus.

"As you can imagine, in a situation like this, you have bumps and bruises and a lot of shaken nerves, and fortunately there are no life threatening injuries," said Shane Carter.

Shane Carter, spokesman for Arkansas Methodist Hospital, says all of the injuries are very minor in nature.

Carter says the injured began arriving around 4:40pm Tuesday afternoon in ambulances and private cars.  Region 8 News does not have a total number of students on both buses, but the uninjured students boarded other buses and sent home.

The Greene County Tech School District did release a statement late Tuesday afternoon.

"We are thankful there were no serious injuries, said Amy Lucius, Assistant Superintendent, Greene County Tech School District. "Our priority is to make sure our students are safe.  In the coming days, we will be working in conjunction with authorities to investigate the accident."

"Our administration will continue to stay with the students and their parents until everyone is discharged from the medical center.  We are very appreciative of the paramedics, doctors, nurses, volunteers and parents who assisted and cared for the children, Lucius added."

26 people were treated in all.  All 26 people have been released from the hospital.
