Local Faces Take Part In "Celebrity Bell Ringer" Day

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - On Saturday about 200 people volunteered to ring the bell for the Salvation Army bell ringers program.

This is what they call their "Celebrity Bell Ringer Day", which includes political leaders, ASU athletes, different people from around the area and some other familiar faces.

"We are in desperate need of volunteers it's as easy as making a call down to the Salvation Army and setting up a day.  Someone can take a day or block of time to ring a bell," said Major Stephanie Greenham.

"I encourage everyone to give.  Check your heart.  Look at what you have and what others don't have at this time of year and give," said Michael Polk.

"I just feel like there is a lot of folks who need help these days and all of us can do a little to help them," said Arliss Dickerson.

All throughout the day volunteers took an hour or two to ring the bell to help.  But the Salvation Army can't always find people to volunteer their time.

"Because of the shortage of volunteers we have to sometimes pay workers to ring the bell.  We pay minimum wage," said Greenham.

In fact, about 25% to30% of what goes into a bucket is sometimes used to pay bell ringers.  An average bucket brings in anywhere from $100 to $200 a day, but on this day all of the proceeds are going to help.

"I knew that they had to pay some people to ring the bell and that's why occasionally I'm glad to be able to help and be a part of it," said Dickerson.

"There should be plenty of volunteers in the area to volunteer for something like this so all the proceeds will go to those who need it most," said Polk.

The Salvation Army is looking for volunteers to help ring the bell throughout the week.  Already three companies have volunteered to take entire days.  Simmons First will staff a location on December 17, Liberty Bank will ring bells on December 18th, and NEA Clinic will do the same on December 20th.  If you would like to volunteer you can contact the Salvation Army.

Below is a full list of the volunteers on Saturday and the times they were out at different locations.
