Arkansas Unemployment Rate Rises

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - The unemployment rate in Arkansas continues to rise. The state Department of Workforce Services says unemployment went up three-tenths of a percentage point last month to 5.7 percent.

The agency says Arkansas' nonfarm jobs dropped by 1,300 jobs last month. Four sectors posted decreases - leisure and hospitality, professional and business services, construction and manufacturing - while one sector increased.

Trade, transportation and utilities increased by 1,500, which is attributed to a jump in retail trade before the holiday season.

The national unemployment rate is 6.7 percent. In November 2007, unemployment was at 5.5 percent in Arkansas.
