Arkansas Recyclers Struggle in Slow Economy

PINE BLUFF, Ark. (AP) - Like many other businesses this year, recyclers are feeling the pinch of a slower economy.

Prices for used soda cans, newspapers, cardboard, scrap metal and other recyclables has dropped in Arkansas and across the nation.

Sandra Graves, the Jefferson County recycling coordinator, says people are still bringing in recyclables - but the recyclers aren't making any money on it.

Gloria Sumner, the executive director of Pine Bluff-Jefferson County's Clean and Beautiful Commission, says the price of aluminum cans dropped by about 50 cents from the summer's prices.

Still, she said she doesn't think the decrease in prices will stop the salvage business because people will still want to recycle.
