Ark. panel rejects bill calling for highway report

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - A House committee has rejected a bill that would have required the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department to provide lawmakers detailed reports with financial information and road-safety data before each legislative session.

Many members of the House Public Transportation Committee were skeptical Thursday over whether it was necessary to put the request for information into law. The bill's backer, Rep. Donna Hutchinson, R-Bella Vista, said it was critical for all legislators, not just committee members, to have the information.

Highway Department Director Dan Flowers said the agency had no problem providing lawmakers with the data.

The bill failed on a voice vote to get out of committee.
