JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) - A scientist with the Natural Resource Conservation Service will offer his theories about the discovery of human bones in 1955 in Blanchard Springs Caverns near Mountain View.
Archeologist John Riggs tells the mystery of the caverns in a free lecture Tuesday at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. The bones were found by cave explorer Roger Bottoms.
Bottoms and three others found several burned cane torches and skeletal remains that were later identified as an Indian who may have died 1,000 years earlier. Archeologists have differed on the origin of the bones, however.
The U.S. Forest Service did not open the cave for public tours until 1973.
