JONESBORO (KAIT) - Officials from communities throughout Region 8 continue to express their concerns for the public's safety in the aftermath of this week's ice storm. Specifically:
Local Office of Emergency Management has been notified that impacted areas have been declared a federal disaster area by the President.
A DUSK TO DAWN curfew is in effect in Corning, Marmaduke, Kennett, Newport, Piggott, Lake City, Bono, Bay, and all of Lawrence County.
From power companies: If the masthead or weatherhead is damaged on your home, you will need to get a qualified, licensed electrician to repair this prior to getting power restored to your home. The power company's responsibility stops at the meter base if your have an underground service connection.
City of Bay is NOT under a boil order. Other rural Craighead water systems are being verified on boil order status at this time.
In Craighead County, storm debris should NOT be taken to any landfills at this time. Just pile debris off the highways and streets at this time; officials are in the process of deciding the next course of action
From Fire Depts. : After a couple of house fires overnight, fire officials urge citizens using space heaters to NOT dry clothes on them, be sure they have an automatic shut-off switch when tipped-over, and to keep small children away from them
Lowes in Jonesboro has a fresh truck-load shipment of generators as of Thursday morning.
In all areas with heavy ice accumulations, stay indoors unless it is absolutely necessary to venture out for life's necessities. Many utility lines are still down, or partially down, blocking roadways, streets, and driveways.
Continue to stay away from ice-covered trees as limbs could still break, resulting in bodily harm.
DO NOT use alternative heat sources meant to used outdoors such as charcoal grills. Deadly carbon monoxide gas can build up in enclosed spaces in a matter of minutes. Emergency rooms in Region 8 have already had to deal with CO poisoning cases in near-death circumstances.
Police departments in all areas are reminding residents that intersections without operational signals should be treated strictly as a 4-way stop!
