JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas State is paying the NCAA a $43,500 fine as a self-imposed penalty for problems with the academic certifications of 21 athletes.
Arkansas State on Tuesday apologized to the NCAA and said it has taken steps to prevent the problems from happening again. The school says the improper certifications were mistakes. The university did not release the names or genders of the athletes or identify their sports. The school says all but one athlete received waivers to continue playing.
The one without the waiver missed 15 games. The school says it began looking into the matter when inconsistencies in evaluation of transfer credits of student athletes were found by advisers. No athletes were accused of improper actions.
