Obama bemoans A-Rod admission of steroid use

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama is calling Alex Rodriguez' admission that he used steroids "depressing news" that tarnishes an entire era in major league baseball.

The All-Star third baseman with the New York Yankees told ESPN on Monday he used banned substances while playing with the Texas Rangers from 2001-03.

Obama was asked about A-Rod during his prime-time news conference.

Obama said it was "depressing news on top of what has been a flurry of depressing" developments. He said it was unfortunate for the athletes who played it straight.

Obama, the father of 2 daughters, said he also was concerned about the message it sends children. He said he hoped that children will realize there are no shortcuts and if you take one, it could tarnish an entire career.
