LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Governor Beebe is headed to Washington this weekend to learn more about how the federal $787 billion stimulus package will affect Arkansas. Beebe says he'll attend a meeting Monday with other governors and President Barack Obama to find out how the stimulus money can be spent in the states.
Beebe says he knows "a large chunk" of Arkansas' funding will go toward Medicaid costs. The sit-down with Obama is part of the National Governors Association's winter meeting.
Beebe told members of the House Democratic Caucus yesterday that spending the stimulus money will become a major issue this session.
He says he doesn't expect it to prolong the session, but that lawmakers need to consider it as a big issue, along with setting up a lottery and scholarship program and cutting the state's sales tax on groceries.
