NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Tynikki Crook scored 24 points, grabbed nine rebounds and five steals to lead Marshall to a 76-57 victory over Memphis in the first round of the Conference USA tournament on Thursday night.
The Thundering Herd (16-14), the tournament's seventh seed, jumped out to a 10-2 lead and led the rest of the way, beating Memphis for the third time this season. Marshall also surpassed its season high of 7 3-pointers with eight in this contest.
Memphis (12-18), a tenth seed, kept the score close for most of the game and trailed only 56-52 with seven minutes left. But Crook scored eight consecutive points as Marshall extended its lead to 64-54 and put the game away.
Marshall will play No. 2 seed UTEP in the quarterfinals on Friday.
Alex Winchell and Ashley Thornton each scored 14 points for the Tigers, who went 1 of 17 from 3-point range.
