QB The Big Story As Missouri Opens Spring Practice

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - For seven straight years, the quarterback was a constant of Missouri football. As 4-year starter Brad Smith exited the program, then-sophomore Chase Daniel was ready to take the reins.

Daniel is gone now, and the only certainty as the Tigers opened spring practice today was that nothing is certain about a starting quarterback.

Coming into the spring, the four likely candidates to replace Daniel have thrown a combined total of 13 passes in college football - and all 13 of those were thrown by sophomore Blaine Gabbert.

Gabbert is the clubhouse leader for Missouri's starting job in 2009. As a true Tiger freshman in 2008 he completed 5 of his 13 passes for 45 yards.

Also in the mix is sophomore Jimmy Costello, who as a walk-on backed up Gabbert and Daniel's chief backup, senior Chase Patton, in the Tigers' 10-4 season last year.
