March 11, 2009 --
The University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville is hosting a benefit concert this Saturday to help raise funds for their new Nursing and Allied Health Facility.
Hayes Olson, the Development Director, says they have seen record enrollment numbers for this Spring.
"We are busting at the seams with our students. The economy is playing a part in everything. In some ways we benefit from that because of the number of students, but we also have to meet the needs of those students by providing them the education they are here for."
Olson says their nursing program is one of their largest divisons at UACCB. As of now, there are too many students to fit inside their current building. In November of 2008, the college announced a capital campaign to raise money for the new building, estimated at $5 million.
"This is just one of the efforts that we are doing to get our new facility up and running. When Danny Dozier approached us with the idea of having a campus concert and using the proceeds to help the school, we were all for it. It's going to be a lot of fun."
Danny Dozier, a local musician, is bringing in talent from all over the are. Performers include: Gary Rounds, Tha Apple Brothers, Sarah Roark, Tim Crouch, Billy Joe French and The Weatherwoods.
"There has never been anything like this. Talent like this all in one area, in one venue... it's just not been done."
Dozier grew up in Batesville and says he's glad to be helping his community.
"It's not only going to show them some good music but it's also going to show them what a wonderful place we have here in Batesville. We want to see the kids grow up here and go to college here and work in this community."
He says if nothing else, you can take a break from all of the bad economic news and hear "some good pickin' ".
