CARAWAY, AR (KAIT) - Two officers were suspended in Caraway Sunday after an incident Saturday night.
According to Caraway Police Chief Shannon Kelems, officers David Choate and Wyatt Wheaton responded to a report of squealing tires.
When they arrived on scene, they also smelled alcohol among a group of people.
The officers began to administer breathalyzer tests to the people in the group. Choate was able to change the straws on the machine until he ran out of straws.
Kelems said the officers continued to administer the breathalyzer tests.
Choate and Wheaton have been suspended for three days without pay.
“I know they are deeply sorry for what they’ve done. I told them we have to move forward from this and learn from this. This incident will never happen again,” Kelems said.
Kelems also said he has made individually wrapped straws for the breathalyzer machine available at the police department for officers when they run low.
Mayor Barry Riley said the incident is still under investigation.
