(KAIT/NBC) -It's the time of year to travel to destinations far and wide for Thanksgiving and it’s time to make sure children are safely tucked in during those long trips.

One important thing is proper car seat installation. If you’re having difficulty installing the seat yourself, consult an expert.

“We want to make sure that at the belt path where we put the vehicle or the lower anchors through the shell of the car seat, once you think it’s nice and tight, you shouldn’t be able to move it more than one inch left to right or front to back at that belt path,” Sarah Tilton, Director of Consumer Advocacy, said.

You might want to think again before you bundle up your little one in a winter coat.

Car seat manufacturers say these bulky items make it impossible to secure kids properly in their seats.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recently updated its policy statement on child passenger safety.

The group now suggests children remain rear-facing for as long as possible, up to the limits of their car safety seats.
