CRAIGHEAD COUNTY, AR (KAIT) - A grant outfitted a local sheriff’s department with over $40,000 worth of tasers.

And it couldn't have come at a better time.

Right now, departments just like the Craighead County Sheriff’s Office are crunching numbers to develop next year’s budget.

This grant enables the department to use that $40,000 toward something else, while also supplying each deputy with a brand new taser.

They were awarded the money from the Defense Logistic Agency, a federal surplus program.

Captain Justin Rolland with the Craighead County Sheriff’s Department said they applied for and were granted 38 tasers.

“By doing this and by being awarded this application,” Rolland said. “It allows us to give every deputy sheriff that less lethal option."

The grant arms officers in the detention center with tasers as well.

Captain Rolland said the department is grateful to be supported by the federal surplus program and save taxpayers some money.
