NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) - Construction has started on a new business in Newport.

Natural State Wellness Enterprises has broken ground on the 4000-block of Comet Drive.

The 35,000 square foot cultivation facility for medical marijuana should be complete sometime by late spring or early summer of next year.

Director of the Newport Economic Development Commission Jon Chadwell said the new development is going to add to the city’s economy.

“This new business is going to create between 40 to 50 jobs in the very beginning,” Chadwell said. “The company also plans to put some of their money back into the community by supporting our non-profit organizations.”

The facility will cultivate the marijuana only.

It will not be sold but shipped to other dispensaries.

There will be five cultivation centers in the state, two in Jackson County.

“This is a good economic boost for our town and our community,” Chadwell said. “We look at this as any other factory that would come to town.”
