JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - A heavily-traveled Jonesboro road is closed until further notice.
A representative with the Craighead County Highway Department told Region 8 News on Monday morning that Rogers Chapel Road, between County Roads 912 and 928, is closed for the rest of the day.
She said power lines are being replaced and requires crews to shut down the road, which is used by many to get from north of Jonesboro to Interstate 555.
According to Monty Williams with Craighead Electric, the ice and snow that fell added a lot of weight to the power lines, in particular, the anchors.
The extra pressure caused three poles to break and they’ve been working on the problem since Sunday.
“It was so icy and stuff it was just hard to stand up. And then it’s so wet from all the other rains and now it’s mushy,” Williams told Region 8 News. “I guess really it’s just the mud and everything’s the main, big hard task that we’ve had through this storm.”
The lines they were working on today were transmission lines, which send power from generators to substations.
There is no word on when the road will reopen.
