Casino discussions held in Pine Bluff

PINE BLUFF, AR (KARK/KAIT) - For the first time, Pine Bluff community members got a firsthand look at the new casinos coming their way.

After last month’s election legalized casino gambling in the state, two licenses were given to Jefferson and Pope counties.

According to a report from NBC affiliate KARK, citizens got the chance to ask questions about the project.

The casinos are expected to bring in hundreds of new jobs, ranging from construction workers, card dealers, restaurant waiters and hotel workers.

Quapaw Chairman John Berry said these jobs can pay well.

“You know, dealers can make over $100,000 a year," Berrey said. "This is with tips and with their base pay.”

The racing commission said they plan to hire a contractor within the next several weeks, with the deadline for the letters of support due in Spring 2019.

The commission said they hope to have the casinos open by early 2020.
