The 19th-ranked Lyon College basketball team got off to a fast start on Monday evening and defeated St. Louis College of Pharmacy by a score 75-49 in American Midwest Conference play. The win sends the Scots to 9-1 (6-0 AMC), while the Eutectics dropped to 5-8 (1-6 AMC).
The Scots shared the wealth early as four straight points by Madison Riley, followed by another two by Samantha French gave Lyon an early 6-0 lead. The Scots increased their lead to 13 points in the quarter at 15-2 as Katie Turner, Lizzie Allgood, Alexis Moore and Riley all contributed to the 9-2 run. STLCOP managed to pull back within 10 points late in the quarter as Morgan Rose drilled a three with under 30 seconds remaining.
STLCOP trimmed the deficit to single-digits early in the second quarter until back-to-back buckets by Turner extended the Scots’ lead to 27-15. The Scots continued to roll offensively throughout the quarter and took a 33-17 lead at the half.
Lyon continued to pull away from STLCOP in the second half as a bucket by Riley to open up the fourth quarter gave the Scots their largest lead of the game at 60-32. The Eutectics attempted one final comeback as a three-pointer by Allison Dewald pulled STLCOP back within 18 points with 4:55 remaining, but the Scots ended the game on a 13-5 run to earn the 26-point victory.
Riley just missed out on recording another double-double as she finished with led all players in points (22) and rebounds (nine). Turner netted 13 points, while Henderson and French added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Scots will host Philander Smith College in their final game of the 2018 calendar year on Thursday night at 6 p.m.
