JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - A big construction project we’ve been following from the start is the overpass at Highland Drive and Nettleton Avenue.

At a meeting held Dec. 19 officials got a little closer to putting that first traffic cone for construction out on the road.

It was the preconstruction meeting, something that has to happen right before the actual ground breaking can begin.

All the major players were there, including representatives with the Arkansas Department of Transportation, the city of Jonesboro, the principal contractor and the utility companies involved.

They gave status reports, discussed any foreseen obstacles, and a timeline for construction to begin.

Officials said depending on the weather, that date should be in March of 2019.

Traffic Operations Engineer Mark Nichols said they think Nettleton is where they’ll start.

“They’re anticipating the contractor starting on Nettleton, south of Highland first,” Nichols said. “That’s going to be the first phase of the project. So the priority has been to move everything and all the utilities out of that area first.”

When that construction gets going at Nettleton Avenue and Watts Street, ARDOT officials said to expect only minor traffic impacts, including short-term one lane traffic at some points.

But officials aren’t expecting any full closures throughout that first phase of construction.
