JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - A Craighead County man was arrested this week after Jonesboro police say he shot at two men using a firearm with an unreadable serial number, police said Thursday.

A $500,000 bond was set for Frank Lashawn Simpson of Jonesboro during a probable cause hearing in front of Judge Tommy Fowler.

Simpson was arrested Jan. 1 on suspicion of simultaneous possession of drugs and firearms, possession of firearm by certain persons, possession of a defaced firearm and possession of meth or cocaine less than two grams.

According to a probable cause affidavit, officers went to the 1300 block of West Huntington Avenue around 8:15 p.m. Jan. 1 after getting a call about shots being fired in the area.

Officers searched the area and found Simpson, who was listed as a convicted felon in the probable cause affidavit.

“Frank Simpson was on scene and told the officers that two subjects had approached his residence on foot with firearms. Simpson said that the two men began shooting at him and the residence,” according to the affidavit. “Simpson said that he then started shooting back at the two gunmen. During an interview with Simpson, he stated that he shot back at the gunmen with a gun that he had gotten from an acquaintance after the homicide earlier in the day.”

Police then asked Simpson about the weapon and Simpson said the weapon was a Smith & Wesson 9 mm but that the weapon had been taken away from the house and was gone, the affidavit noted.

“A Smith and Wesson 9 mm was later located in the residence, but the serial number on the firearm had been scratched to the point it was unreadable,” police said in the affidavit.

Officers also searched Simpson and found a small amount of suspected cocaine in his pants pocket, police said.

Simpson will appear in circuit court Feb. 22.
