MARKED TREE, AR (KAIT) - There's a tree in one Region 8 city known around town as an infamous crash site.

After a deadly wreck at that same spot left two people dead, officials are stepping in.

Community members tell Region 8 News it has been dubbed "dead man's tree."

And after a crash killed two people on Dec. 29, some think it’s time to cut the tree down.

It's on Elm Street in Marked Tree, near the intersection with Highway 308.

Mayor Danny Johnson said the tree is on a state right-of-way, so any change would have to go through the Arkansas Department of Transportation.

And after receiving several calls from concerned citizens, Mayor Johnson said he made a call of his own.

"We're working, we're trying to get help from the state," Johnson said. "We're working with them and as soon as they decide what they want to do, we'll pitch in and help."

Mayor Johnson said the curve right before the tree might have something to do with the number of crashes.

He's waiting on ARDOT to get back with him with a decision.

Until then, he asks people to slow down and be extra cautious in that area.
