CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - You might be focusing on eating healthy to start off 2019, but a local registered dietitian does not recommend the popular Keto diet to help with your new year goals.

The Keto diet is extremely low in carbs and high in fats, meaning unlimited bacon.

While the number on the scale might go down, dietitian Janet Anders with St. Francis Medical Center said most people lose muscle instead of fat and cautioned against it.

“While we short term might see that rapid weight loss, we don’t know long term what that will do to your overall health," Anders said. “And while it’s always nice to think about the short term, what are you going to be looking at 20 to 30 years down the road for disease risk, and I just don’t think we know enough about it.”

According to Anders, it’s a very risky diet and not necessarily helpful to prevent any certain disease.

She recommended to reach out to a doctor or a registered dietitian if you have questions about what is best for your overall health.
