NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) - A Jackson County man was sentenced Friday to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the death of a 10-month-old child in 2017.

According to 3rd Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney Henry Boyce, Benjamin Collier of Newport entered the guilty plea during a court session in Newport in front of Circuit Judge Harold Erwin. The plea stemmed from a Sept. 10, 2017 incident in which the 10-month-old child died.

“Evidence in the case including opinions of the State Medical Examiner’s Office indicated the infant died as a result of a closed head injury,” Boyce said in the media release. "After responding to a 911 call on the date of the incident, police developed Collier as a suspect and he later confessed to the crime.

Collier was originally charged with first-degree murder in connection with the case.
