Medical marijuana cultivation facility breaks ground in Jackson County

NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) - A groundbreaking officials said has been nearly a year in the making was celebrated Tuesday.

Jackson County welcomed Delta Medical Cannabis Company.

The medical marijuana cultivation facility will be 35,000 square feet.

Officials said 20 to 30 high-paying jobs will be available as soon as the facility opens, with the hope of additional jobs as the need grows.

It's a company Newport Mayor David Stewart said will be a huge benefit for the surrounding community.

"It will help put us on the map," Stewart said. "We'll have two facilities with a total of upwards of 100 new employment in Newport with very well-paying jobs, so we'll take that any day."

Mayor Stewart said he's heard nothing but positive feedback from the community throughout the process.

It was announced about 11 months ago that Delta Medical Cannabis Company would be one of Arkansas' licensed cultivation facilities.

After a few setbacks, the president of the company was excited to finally make it to this step.

"It's been a long hard road, lots of litigation, lots of ups and downs," President Don Parker said. "We are all elated today is finally here where we can start constructing our facility."

That construction will begin as soon as the ground dries out.

Parker said they expect the facility to take about five months to finish.

Then, it takes about 90 days after they’re approved to start growing medical marijuana before it will be available for the dispensaries.
