JACKSON COUNTY, AR (KAIT) - Arkansas State Police have released the name of the trooper who was involved in an officer-involved shooting.
ASP says Corporal Robert Stewart, a twelve year veteran of the department assigned to Jackson County, Highway Patrol Division, Troop B, was the officer involved in the shooting of 42-year-old Sjon Anthony Woods Thursday, Jan. 17.
Woods was taken to an area hospital for treatment and at last check, was listed in serious condition.
ASP says Corporal Stewart was responding to a call from local law enforcement officers requesting assistance.
Jackson County Sheriff’s Department dispatched deputies around 1:00 p.m. to a residence along Jackson County Road 76, east of Swifton.
Initial statements say a deputy made contact with Woods, who was armed with a handgun and allegedly fired it into the ground.
After learning of the situation, ASP, Swifton police, and Tuckerman police responded to the location.
Woods disregarded law enforcement commands to drop his weapon and pointed it at the officers, at which time an Arkansas State Trooper shot Woods.
No officers were injured.
The Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division is investigating the use of deadly force by a law enforcement officer.
The state trooper involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
