IMBODEN, AR (KAIT) - January’s teacher of the month is from Sloan-Hendrix Elementary and she is being praised for her devotion to her students in spite of heartbreak earlier in the school year.
“As a family, we’ve been through a lot this year. We lost our twin boys. So it means a lot. Thank you,” said Andi Hickman.
She said the twins passed away shortly after birth. After giving herself and her family some time to grieve, Hickman returned to school. She said teaching and being with her students is one thing that pushed her forward.
"I'm able to just be in the moment with them, and just keep going," said Hickman.
She said the student lifted her spirits and kept her going. Throughout it all, she said the twins' memory stays with her.
"We try to do everything to honor them," said Hickman.
It prompted her to start a memorial scholarship that will go to a senior at the Sloan-Hendrix School District.
"We want to make sure it goes to somebody who has persevered either through tragedy or through obstacles," said Hickman.
She hopes Conner James' and Caleb John's names could live on helping others.
"It's really in their memory. They're a part of us everyday," said Hickman.
She said the award symbolizes a journey.
“It was very hard so just to know that people appreciate that is. It means a lot,” said Hickman.
Now she’s raising her two eldest boys, along with her husband, together a family just trying to make the world a better place any way they can.
