NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) - In an effort to attract new industry, Newport has a certified select sites program managed by Entergy, their Economic Development Department and Arkansas Economic Development Commission.
The Newport Airport Industrial Site, which is a part of the Competitive Communities Initiative, has 76 acres of flat ground and is ready for industrial development.
Newport Economic Development Commission Director Jon Chadwell said the environmental issues are resolved, a clearance for artifacts and endangered species are completed, and utilities have been extended to the site.
“A certified site means that you’ve gone through all of the studies and evaluations of the site have been completed," Chadwell said. "So that if a company comes in, will know they can begin to do work building their building on the site without any surprises.”
Chadwell said they are looking to recruit primarily manufacturing industries, which would compliment the metal manufacturing and food processing industries in the area, or an industry that would add value to agriculture products.
As for incentives, Chadwell said they have local control of the site, so they can use the cost of land to attract an industry in Newport.
Chadwell said it’s a low cost way for an industry to get into business relatively quickly.
