NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) - The American Red Cross has opened a shelter in Newport as a precaution as officials watch the levee in Jackson County.

The shelter will be open at the First Baptist Church in Newport at 217 Main Street, officials with the Red Cross said.

Anyone needing directions or information about the shelter can contact Chapter Disaster Manager Dean Hannah at 501-529-7976.

The group will provide emergency housing, food, mental health and health services for people in need.
