BAXTER COUNTY, AR (KAIT) - The body of an Arkansas man has been sent to the state crime lab for autopsy after he was found dead in a jail cell.
Frank Compton, 53, of Harrison was found unresponsive in his cell at 3:19 a.m. Wednesday during a routine check at the Baxter County Detention Center, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.
Sheriff John Montgomery said jailers immediately began CPR and an ambulance was called to the jail.
“Efforts to revive Frank Compton were not successful,” Montgomery said. “He was pronounced deceased at the detention center.”
Mountain Home police arrested Compton Tuesday following his discharge from the Baxter Regional Medical Center.
He had been taken by ambulance to the hospital earlier in the day with unspecified medical issues. Following his discharge from the hospital, the sheriff said Compton remained on the premises and was “observed allegedly trying to break into some automobiles.”
Mountain Home police arrested him on suspicion of public intoxication and criminal trespass.
He was booked into the detention center at 8:24 p.m. and placed into a temporary holding cell by himself, the sheriff said.
His body has been sent to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory in Little Rock for autopsy to determine the cause of death.
The sheriff’s office has also asked Arkansas State Police to investigate the death.
