JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -Students who wanted to show off their welding skills had to look no further than ASU-Newport campus in Jonesboro.
On Thursday, a “Weld-A-Thon” competition took place among 14 area high schools.
Each three-person team had three hours to weld a metal bench from a blueprint given to them.
The purpose of the event is to help open doors for students who wish to take these type of skills into the workforce.
The top three teams won $30,000 in prizes, which included welding helmets and supplies, steel, and even scholarships.
Third place went to Piggott, second to Marmaduke and first place went to Rivercrest.
The competition took place from 9 a.m. until noon Feb. 21.
A State representatives said the event was made possible through a partnership between the college and industry partners.
