CROSS COUNTY, AR (KAIT) - The sight of freshly cut copper in the trunk of a vehicle piqued the interests of Cross County deputies, who now have two people facing criminal mischief and theft charges.
According to a post on the Cross County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, John Eldridge and Ronald Shane Bailey were arrested Feb. 21 after deputies saw a vehicle on CR 403.
Deputies spoke with Eldridge and Bailey about the situation.
“Deputies observed what they believed to be freshly cut copper wire in the trunk of the vehicle along with tools commonly used for burglaries,” the post noted. “Due to the recent number of thefts in this particular area, Detectives were called to the scene to assist.”
Deputies also found fresh tire tracks on wet gravel nearly 10 miles north on CR 403.
“The tracks led to a local farmer’s grain bins. Deputies and detectives discovered the wire in the vehicle matched the wire on the scene along with multiple other items that linked the suspects to the initial area,” officials said.
Eldridge and Bailey were arrested on suspicion of 1st degree criminal mischief, theft of scrap metal, criminal trespassing and obstruction of interior prohibited.
