NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) - Arkansas State University-Newport worked along with city leaders to bring the community together with an arboretum.
ASUN broke ground Wednesday to begin the project in hopes to bring more local residents to the campus.
Chancellor Sandra Massey said the first tree planted in the arboretum is in memory of someone dear to the campus.
“Our faculty and staff, their wish was to dedicate the first tree to Lieutenant Patrick Weatherford,” Massey said. “He had a tremendous impact on the community.”
Weatherford was an alumni at ASUN and a Newport police officer who died in the line of duty two years ago.
Massey said she hopes the arboretum will be filled with trees.
“We’ll eventually have trees, a lot more trees than we’ll start with,” Massey said. “It’ll be a great environment for people to just come and observe.”
The park will be equipped with benches and trails to allow all to enjoy the trees.
