OSCEOLA, AR (WMC) - Police in Arkansas surrounded a man at a gas station for more than six hours.
The standoff took place at a Shell in Osceola. Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office had an armored vehicle as they were joined by Osceola police and Arkansas State Police.
Workers and employees are evacuated from the business as officers surrounded a man in a pickup truck.
“They told her to have all of us go into a back room and lock the door,” witness Andrea Mandley said. “That’s what we had done until they came and got us out.”
Arkansas State Police later identified the suspect as Justin Roby, 36. They said Roby previously fled from Missouri Highway Patrol troopers earlier that night before ASP spotted him near Osceola.
Roby was wanted out of DeSoto County, Mississippi for sexual battery.
State police said a woman was also in the vehicle, possibly being held against her will and that Roby was armed.
Troopers were able to get Roby to let the woman go free at around 2 a.m. Two hours later, he was taken into custody without incident.
“I was not ready for that, especially not here in this small town,” Mandley said. “It’s always quiet. As long as I’ve been coming here, 10 years. It’s just a wow. Serious wow.”
Those evacuated were left stranded for hours as they could not get their cars out of the parking lot.
It’s unclear what charges Roby will face.
