MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. (4/22/19) – The Arkansas State men’s golf team shot a second-round 274 Monday at the Sun Belt Conference Championships, jumping from fourth place to first with a combined 555 at the Raven Golf Club at Sandestin.
Freshman Luka Naglic remained atop the individual leaderboard and junior Zan Luka Stirn climbed from seventh place into a tie for second to lead the Red Wolves through 36 holes of action. Four of A-State’s five competing players turned in a score of par or better today, helping the squad cut seven strokes off its first-round total.
The Red Wolves now hold a three-stroke lead over Coastal Carolina and Georgia Southern, which are tied for second place. While the individual medalist will be crowned at the end of tomorrow’s stroke play, the top four teams in the standings will advance to match play on Wednesday. A-State currently holds an eight-stroke lead over fifth-place UT Arlington.
Stirn posted the lowest score of the day for the Red Wolves, shooting a 66 to give him a 135 total through two rounds of action. He is two strokes behind Naglic, who carded a 67 for the second 18 holes to put him nine strokes under par for both days played thus far.
Also competing for A-State, Matthew Cole is tied for 27th place with a 144 (74-70), Julien Sale tied for 40th with a 146 (72-74) and Joel Wendin tied for 46th with a 147 (76-71).
The Sun Belt Conference Championships will resume with the start of the third round Tuesday morning at 6:30 a.m. CT.
