JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -Police arrested a Jonesboro man after they say he stole a check from his dad to pay his rent.

On Feb. 13, the victim reported that someone had stolen and forged one of his personal checks.

He provided investigators with a copy of the check, according to the affidavit, which showed it was written out to a certain person.

During the investigation, the detective learned the man’s son, 37-year-old Steven B. Smith Jr., had written the check to his landlord for rent.

The victim, according to the court documents, told the detective he did not give his son permission to take one of his checks and does not know when he took it.

On Monday, April 22, Smith appeared before Craighead County District Court Judge Tommy Fowler on a bench warrant where probable cause had already been found to arrest and charge him with one count of second-degree forgery.

Smith is currently free on a $1,500 bond awaiting arraignment on May 31.
