HUB celebrates 2-year anniversary of serving Jonesboro

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Helping Underserved Belong, also known as the HUB, in Jonesboro recently celebrated its second anniversary of operation.

In that time, they have worked to serve over 1,000 homeless people in the city.

On Wednesday, community members joined together to celebrate the occasion and show their support to the HUB.

President of Board of Directors Jeri Mays said the HUB was needed in Jonesboro.

“We’ve gone from not really knowing what to do when we opened to having a streamlined system,” Mays said. “We have resources that we never imagined were available and having success stories that warm my heart.”

The HUB is growing and always could use the support of the community.

“We hope to see a homeless shelter that is large enough to reach our capacity because there are more homeless than anyone ever dreamed of in Jonesboro.” Mays said. “They’re not as visible as they might be, but they’re here and they do need help.”

The hospitality room was dedicated at Wednesday’s celebration to Kristie Stokes.

She was one of the HUB’s founding directors who recently died.

Mays said Stokes was instrumental to the HUB’s prosperous beginnings.

The HUB currently needs some specific donations for the homeless:

  • Sunscreen
  • Bottled Water
  • Bug Spray
  • High Protein Snacks
  • Backpacks
