MONETTE, AR (KAIT) - Governor Asa Hutchinson is continuing his tradition of school tours across the state with a stop here in Region 8.

The governor was at Buffalo Island Central High School in Monette Monday afternoon.

It’s part of his push to promote computer science education across the state and encourage students to enroll in coding courses.

The BIC computer science department hopes his visit will boost enrollment numbers for next year.

“I think they realize that there are a lot of jobs here in Arkansas, that they don’t have to move away for computer science,” said teacher Kristen Thomas. “Hopefully, they see the potential that that career offers them.”

This is Governor Hutchinson's eighth tour of Arkansas schools since he took office in January 2015.

He has visited nearly 70 schools to explain what kind of doors coding and computer science can open.

His next stop is in West Memphis on Tuesday, April 30.
