On the second day of the American Midwest Conference (AMC) Tournament, the Lyon College softball team defeated No. 5 Freed-Hardeman University, 5-4.
Freed-Hardeman University ends the year with a 26-14 clip on the year, 15-9 in the AMC. Lyon moves to 33-13 on the season, 17-7 in the AMC.
The Lions got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning. Caitlin Mitchell delivered a two-run home run, plating Annalise Jarnagin and giving FHU a 2-0 advantage.
The Scots answered right back in the bottom of the frame. After a Mikayla Mullen walk and a single by Cheyenne Herrera loaded the bases, Kendra Kelley drew a walk, cutting the deficit to just one. Megan Micke, then, delivered a two-out two-RBI single to left field, scoring Mullen and Taylor and giving the Scots a 3-2 lead.
Lyon tacked on another run in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Cheyenne Black struck a double off the center field fence. After a pair of walks loaded the bases, Mikayla Mullen executed the squeeze bunt to perfection, allowing Black to score and extending the Scots lead to two.
FHU cut Lyon's lead in half with a two-out RBI single by Caitlin Mitchell in the fourth, scoring Lily Bombard from second.
The Scots added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. After a Riley Shaw one-out single, Cheyenne Herrera slapped a double to right field, putting runners on second and third. Next, Mikayla Mullen laid down a flawless squeeze bunt for the second time in the game, this time scoring Shaw from third and giving the Scots a 5-3 lead.
In the top of the sixth inning, Annalise Jarnagin hit a solo home run over the center field fence, cutting Lyon's lead to just one.
In the top of the seventh, Katelyn Platt retired the side in order, earning the Scots a 5-4 victory over FHU on Thursday. Platt threw all seven innings, while striking out two and earning the complete game win. Cheyenne Herrera paced Lyon offensively with two hits and scored a run in the contest.
The Scots will continue play in the AMC Tournament tomorrow as they face No. 1 Columbia College at 11:00 a.m. Lyon will need to defeat Columbia twice, while Columbia needs to defeat Lyon just once to advance the AMC Tournament Championship Game.
