Press Release from Williams Baptist Athletics

After falling 1-0 to William Woods University, the Williams Baptist University softball team beat Lindenwood University-Belleville 5-0 to advance to the American Midwest Conference Pool B championship. The Lady Eagles will face a rematch with WWU, and will need to beat them twice to make the conference championship game.

Facing elimination, WBU showed no signs of nerves. Catherine Totty (SR/Haslet, Texas) kept the Lady Lynx batters off balance all game long on her way to a three-hit shutout performance from the circle. Meanwhile, the Lady Eagles smashed 10 hits and five runs to stay alive in the AMC tournament.

The scoring got started in the fourth inning with two outs for WBU. Ashley Lyons (SR/Vilonia, Ark.) reached base via hit-by-pitch before advancing to second on an error. Next, Erica Arguello (SR/San Antonio, Texas) accounted for her third RBI of the tournament with a single to left field, scoring Lyons.

The team would increase its lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning with two more runs on two hits. Tori Johnson (JR/Clinton, Ark.) led the inning off with a walk. Karoline Thomas (SR/Black Oak, Ark.) ripped a double to the fence in left center, allowing Johnson to come all the way around to score. Next, Maggie Crossno (SO/Senath, Mo.) hit a rocket up the middle, scoring Thomas.

The Lady Eagles added two more insurance runs in the seventh, increasing the lead to 5-0.

That is all the runs WBU needed as Totty pitched a gem from the circle. She only allowed five players from LU-B to reach safely in the whole game. Her performance earned her seventh win of the season, as her ERA has shrunk to 3.82 on the season.

Williams lost the first game of the day 1-0 to William Woods, meaning they will face a rematch against the Owls tomorrow (May 3) at 11 a.m. The Lady Eagles will need to win both games to claim the Pool B championship. If they win Pool B, they will face the winner of Pool A.

If Columbia College wins Pool A, then the winner of Pool B will receive in automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament. If Columbia does not win Pool A, then the winner of the Pool A winner versus Pool B winner gets the automatic bid.
