Arkansas State legend Sonja Tate named new Paragould girls basketball coach

PARAGOULD, AR (KAIT) - One of the greatest players in Arkansas State women’s basketball history will coach in the 5A East next season.

Paragould announced Friday night that Sonja Tate will be the new head girls basketball coach. She takes over after fellow A-State alum Jay Cook left for Cabot.

Tate spent the 2018-19 season at her alma mater West Memphis as an assistant coach. The Arkansas Sports Hall of Famer was also a former head coach at ASU Mid-South. She led the Lady Greyhounds to a Region championship in the 2016-17 season. Tate was an assistant at A-State under Brian Boyer from 2012 to 2015.

She is the career scoring leader in both women’s and men’s basketball at Arkansas State (2,312 points). Tate also holds the single-season rebounding record with 327 boards and is the career steals leader with 402.
