NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) - A pair of medical marijuana facilities are under construction to house plants for growth and cultivation.
A medical marijuana facility is expected to be completed in September of this year.
Located on Rice Road across from the correctional facility, the 40,000-square-foot building is under construction by Harco Construction out of Little Rock.
Construction Superintendent Tony Ivey said this isn’t the first time he’s built a marijuana facility.
He’s been told by the owners they’re planning for future growth.
“What the owners are looking at is expansion,” Ivey said. “We did one in White Hall as well and everywhere you build one … they’re building it in area enough where they can expand, more profit. It’s good for them and it’s good for the community as well.”
Ivey said he’s enjoyed working with the city of Newport on the project.
“The city’s been great,” Ivey said. “I met the Judge, met the city council and our inspector has been coming out and he’s helpful.”
However, the weather sometimes stops the progress on the facility.
“The rain has been horrible out here,” Ivey said. “We’re competing against that.”
Officials are already discussing paving the gravel road leading to the facility due to the projected money the plants are going to bring in.
