Construction on Tom Lee Park may be delayed until fall

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - The World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest kicks off in Memphis on Wednesday.

This year, 250 teams will compete to be named the best.

Just ahead of the competition, officials noted the future of Tom Lee Park could be adjusted.

Construction for the new park may now begin in the fall instead of next month.

"I think the opportunity top open it up this summer in the Bicentennial year June, July and August when we are flooded with people in the parks," Memphis River Parks Partnership President Carol Coletta explained. "It's just a good opportunity and instead of just pushing dirt around, we're going to open it up this summer and start construction when the construction documents are done."

Memphis in May and the Memphis River Parks Partnership have been in mediation over the future of the park.

Memphis in May organizers are concerned the new designs will reduce space needed for Beale Street Music Festival and the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest.

Both groups are trying to work out a compromise.
